The Orange Man (Apelsinmannen)

Birgitta Stenberg

The 1950s was a time when frantic rumours were spreading that a homosexual conspiracy existed in Sweden; when the press surrounding Hajby, Kejne and Quensel was at its peak; when the riots in Berzelii Park shook Stockholm.

High school student Birgitta is part of a nocturnal Stockholm, inhabited by homosexuals, alcoholics, murderers, dealers, prostitutes, drug addicts, artists and poets. There are two characters that become particularly visible from this mish-mash of people – the destructive cult poet Paul Andersson and the drug dealer Micke. The latter – dubbed The Orange Man by the media after having poisoned the infamous pastor Kejne with oranges – was involved in a number of high-profile trials.

The Orange Man is a personal account of a recent past which today appears to be very exotic.
