The Book About the Vikings
Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg
Archeological excavations during the last twenty years in Russia and Ukraine have remarkably increased the scientist’s knowledge. The findings are presented in a popular scientific way in this book’s chapter on the Vikings Far East. Thrilling fact is told also about the Vikings colonies on Greenland and in Canada.
No story becomes real if people aren’t in it. In this book we meet a number of strong personalities, among others a number of women. Even the anonymous people contribute to the reading experience, for example a woman who has been abandoned by her lover. By a Russian flood bank, in the ground, letters have been found that were written on birch bark. The woman wrote: “If you had acknowledged our love, you would have torn away from people’s eyes and come to me.”
The Vikings were good organizers, a necessity to succeed with the expeditions they paerformed in more or less all directions. They were also skilled engineers and, as you know, grand ship makers.
What were other culture’s impressions on the Vikings? Some wrote their opinions down. Read their own words! For instance the Viking surprised its surroundings with his demon like ruling and the woman’s strong position.
