The Struggle Against Breakers (Kampen mot bränningarna)
Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg
In the autumn of 1726, the East Indian Ship Zeewijk set off on its journey from Middelburg in the Netherlands. Its final destination was the jewel of the Dutch East Indian Company's Empire, Batavia at Java. The chief officer was greedy Jan Steyns, in his first job as Captain in command. Also onboard were three Swedes who, by the whim of destiny, had come to Middelburg. Steyns' greed determined the destiny of the Zeewijk. In the hope of finding the foundered ship Aagdekerke with its valuable cargo, Steyns was tempted into sailing too close to the huge Land Eendrachts, the western coast of Australia, and the Zeewijk foundered as well. On a small coral island with very little fresh water, the crew started their struggle for survival.
